Dúkr

Cloth · Napkin Holder

Dúkr is a standing napkin holder inspired by the organic forms of the Grein collection. Hand-forged iron branches and intricately shaped leaves give an everyday table essential a sculptural presence of its own.

Grein by Jens Dalsgaard

Design language

The smallest details can bring a table together. Dúkr takes its name from the Old Norse word for cloth. The name reflects its simple purpose: to keep napkins close at hand while making them a considered part of the table setting. Two upright, branch-like iron sides hold folded napkins between them, creating an open composition inspired by the forms of nature. Individually shaped leaves and delicate branching details give the holder a distinctive silhouette, allowing it to complement the plates, glasses and other elements of a beautifully laid table. Despite its modest scale, Dúkr carries the character of the Grein collection. The strength of forged iron meets the gentle forms of leaves and branches, transforming a practical object into a small work of craftsmanship. Even when the napkins have been removed, Dúkr remains a decorative presence on the table — a subtle expression of nature in iron.

Craftsmanship

Dúkr is constructed as a freestanding piece of hand-forged iron. Its two upright sides support the napkins while maintaining an open, balanced form. Working on this smaller scale requires careful attention to the relationship between the base, branches and leaves. The holder must remain stable and functional without losing the lightness of its organic silhouette. Each leaf is shaped individually, with textured surfaces and subtle variations that reveal the work of the hammer. The transitions between branches and leaves contribute to the overall composition. Every Dúkr is made by hand. Small differences in the shapes of the leaves, the branching details and the finished expression are therefore a natural part of each piece's individual character.
